iron-deficiency anemia

Iron-deficiency is the most common type of anemia. It occurs when the body does not have enough of the mineral iron, which contributes to the production of hemoglobin. Since Hemoglobin is the protein responsible for carrying blood to your tissues - when there is not enough iron in your bloodstream the rest of your body does not get the oxygen it needs to function properly.

sickle cell disease

Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder which causes the production of abnormal hemoglobin. This changes the shape of red blood cells, causing them to get stuck and block blood flow to organs. This causes pain and infections, however the worst complications include strokes, organ damage and other disabilities.

hemolytic anemia

Hemolytic anemia is a disorder in which the body destroys red blood cells faster than they can be made. This impairs the body’s functioning as there is a decrease in oxygen going to the body’s organs.

This can either be inherited or acquired through one’s lifestyle.

 

aplastic anemia

Aplastic anemia occurs when your bone marrow is damaged and can’t make enough red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This disorder is both inherited or acquired.

Groups at risk include people undergoing radiation or chemotherapy and people with conditions or diseases that destroy the bone marrow.

pernicious anemia

Vitamin B12 and folate are needed to make healthy red blood cells. Your body absorbs these vitamins from foods. Pernicious anemia occurs when the body cannot absorb enough vitamin B12 from food and therefore can’t make enough red blood cells.

Groups at risk include those who have conditions preventing them from absorbing vitamin B12 and those who do not include enough vit B12 in their diet.

Thrombophilia is a disorder that increases a person’s risk of developing abnormal blood clots in the veins or arteries.

There are different types of Thrombophilia, including inherited and acquired.

COAGULOPATHY

Coagulopathy is a condition where the body’s ability to form blood clots is impaired. This may cause excessive or prolonged bleeding, which may occur randomly or following an injury or minor procedure.
