myeloma

Myeloma is the cancer of plasma cells. These plasma cells are white blood cells that produce antibodies, protecting your body against pathogens and pathogenic bacteria. The Myeloma cancerous cells inhibit the normal production of antibodies, this causes a weakened immune system - making the body more susceptible to infection.

Myeloma cells are produced and collect in the bone marrow, where they affect the production and function of healthy red and white blood cells. These Myeloma cells travel through the blood stream and accumulate in other bones throughout the body. It is often referred to as Multiple Myeloma as it occurs at many sites in the bone marrow.

Complications of Myeloma include anemia, immune system suppression, renal damage, bone disease and increased risk of bone fractures.

Myeloma counts for 1% of all malignancies. The median age at diagnosis is 65 years, however 2,5% of patients are less than 40 years of age at presentation. The malignancy is most common in patients of African descent.
